The Genius of Bill Maher

Bill Maher can have his truly funny moments when he's not being misogynistic.

In this clip, he deals with how America sinks to a new low when the hottest application for the iphone is a farting noise. Seriously.

Then he enters the terrority of the sublime when he dons a 'snuggie', a blanket with sleeves - these are advertised on most American TV channels - he refers to it as a giant bib. He plaintively asks what kind of message is this sending to the Chinese, who 'own our ass', a $6,000 debt by every man, woman and child in America.

He then summarizes beautifully what is wrong with America when it's down to fartnoises, snuggleys and twittering.

  1. Love it, especially that line, our booze-cruise has hit the ice...

I think I'm going to pass this on to my twittering facebook 'friends' ;-)

  2. He has been a hero of mine from the first time I saw him in Real time on HBO, when I first arrived here. He seemed to be the voice of sanity in a mad, mad world!

Yes, I fell out with him last year due to his sneers about Hillary Clinton, but I've forgiven him since. On the first of the series of Real Time, back this season, a couple of weeks ago, he had three women on his panel - a first, I think. It was a very good show too. Friday's, from which this clip came wasn't nearly as good, with three men on the panel trying to out-shout one another. This, from his "epilogue" was good stuff! :-D

His film of Religulous, now on DVD, is well worth a look too, WWW.

I haven't seen Religulous yet, it lasted too short a time in theatres. I'm adding it to my list, thank for reminding me.
He reminds me of Carlin at his best.

  4. He's funny. I hardly ever watch TV, so I see him when he is on the blogs I read, like yours. To some extent he speaks to what I think is the worst problem that the US faces, which is a long standing streak of extreme anti-intellectualism in US culture. It retards us in so many ways, socially, technologically, medically and culturally (that is, the arts and literature, etc.) The general hostility to academia and science here is so sad.

  5. That's why it is so important to have the Mahers, Stewarts and Colberts around to remind us!

  6. Excellent stuff. So much funnier and sharper than most of the dim-witted TV presenters we have here. Though Bremner, Bird and Fortune do some great political dissection.

  7. For me, he's excellent - provided he stays off the Jewish/Palestinian situation.

Over 'ere it takes the satirists to speak the truth, the pundits are atrocious and IMHO bought and paid for by their masters, the advertisers.
