Apparently, my problem was caused by some of the gel breaking away from the retina, and putting strain on it - hence the 'flashes'. The lump of gel then floats around the fluid in the eyeball and we 'see' the shadow of it as a floater. Sometimes, the action of the gel breaking away can cause the retina to tear, or in some cases to become detached completely. Tears are easily repaired with laser treatment, but detachment is most serious, of course, and requires complex eye surgery. Thankfully, I suffered neither, though he did warn me that I was likely to experience a similar problem with the right eye, as this aging process tends to occur in both. If it did, I was to consult him again post-haste.
I note from your latest post you have new spectacles. My left eye recently began developing light flashes, followed by an enormous black floater that looked to me, and behaved, like a half-dead spider drowning in my eyeball. According to the eye quack it was all perfectly normal and part of the natural aging process (which was fine for him to say, he still looked wet behind the ears). Thankfully, five weeks on it has almost cleared up. The flashes are only occasional, and the dead spider has rotted away to a mere, occasionally irritating, shadow that flits across my vision.
I do hope your problem is equally temporary.R J Adamshttp://sparrowchat.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14874528.post-24405276411530340792010-01-13T21:27:55.475-03:302010-01-13T21:27:55.475-03:30Yes I hope it's nothing serious or at least no...Yes I hope it's nothing serious or at least nothing that can't be cured.

I have a blind friend who managed to keep it a secret way too long.
