Words for Wednesday

I am hosting for the month of July 2019.

This meme was started by Delores a long time ago. Computer issues led her to bow out for a while. The meme was too much fun to let go, and now Words for Wednesday is provided by a number of people and has become a movable feast.

Essentially the aim is to encourage us to write. Each week we are given a choice of prompts: which can be words, phrases, music or an image. What we do with those prompts is up to us: a short story, prose, a song, a poem, what have you. We can use some or all of the prompts.

Some of us put our creations in comments on the post, and others post on their own blog - please provide the link to your blog in the comments. I would really like it if as many people as possible joined in this fun meme, which includes cheering on the other participants. If you are posting on your own blog - let me know so that I, and other participants, can come along and applaud.

Huge thanks to everyone who joins in the fun and/or comments.

This week's prompts are a photo followed by 2 lists of 4 words each:

(1)
Iceberg
Gas Pump
Cellar
Painting

(2)
Blackboard
Carrot
Doorbell
Cheese

Good luck!

Posted later - my story. All words used and the picture.

They managed to get a fire lit from the driftwood on the beach. A complicated process involving shaving some of the wood off the larger bits. Boy, but it was cold. Through the broken door, the small town outside looked forlorn and deserted.

But they were lucky in their survival, the iceberg had been small but the boat had taken a beating alright with a small hole in her side and water gushing in. It wasn’t time to make Titanic jokes, thought Cindy as she warmed her hands on the measly flames. They had barely tacked into the small harbour, an old settlement off the northern coast and all five of them jumping on to the shore. She looked out the broken window and saw their boat now crashing to pieces off the rocks.

It’s an old schoolhouse! said Kevin, there’s the remains of an old blackboard of the wall! And he brushed off the cobwebs from the flaking black painting.

Peter just then emerged from the cellar holding a few dusty jars of food and an old school bell, displaying his cheesy, fearless smile. They all rolled their eyes at him.

There are some really ancient carrots down there too, he grinned, if we get desperate. But the good news guys?

They all looked at him, in a mixture of shivering despair and overwhelming gratitude, yes they were alive.

He pumped his fist: There’s gas in our sat phone! Search and rescue is on the way!

  2. 'I am going outside and might be some time' has been heralded as the last words of a hero.
Captain Lawrence Edward Grace Titus Oates was an Antarctic explorer. He had gangrene and frostbite and knew that his condition was compromising his companion's chance of survival. So he headed out into a blizzard and certain death.
I knew that story and his final words were chalked on the blackboar d while we were studying Antarctica when I was at school. A carrot to encourage us to think of others before ourselves.
Now? Hard cheese I say, without an iota of sympathy.
I recently learned about another side to the man, which painted an entirely different picture. This courageous soldier got an eleven year old girl pregnant. And deserted her. And a bell rang for me. Not a doorbell, but a whacking great church bell.
I think his death was too quick and too easy. Walking onto an iceberg in a blizzard would have been relatively quick. In my eyes the eternal flames of hell wouldn't have been hot enough - and I would gladly train a gas pump on the blaze.

    1. I left out cellar. There isn't a cellar deep enough to hold men like this. Not deep enough, dark enough, or rat-ridden enough.

    2. I don't recall learning anything or not much at all about Antarctica. All I remember is there was a hut and a couple of explorers. Even the name you mention doesn't ring a bell. what a horrible man he was.

    3. EC I am so impressed with your take on the words. Wow!

What a horrible, horrible man. A paedophile and rapist. Children can't consent to sex.

Death was too good for him. Rotting would help, the longer the better.

  4. Nice selection:
"Somebody light a fire under Gary will you? That guy moves as slow as an iceberg in January."
"The painting is finished in the cellar room boss and I'm just about to install the blackboards." Todd grinned. "I've got a plan to motivate Gary. The carrot on the string should be here any minute now."
The door bell rang, tinkling faintly from above ground.
"Hey Gary, I think that's Nancy. You wanna....."
Gary was up the stairs before Todd could finish his sentence, grinning like a mouse with a plate of cheese.
The Boss shook his head. "Never seen him move that fast. Well, I'll go gas up the truck for this afternoons trip to town. Will he actually get any work done at all now?"
"Nancy got her orders. She'll keep him working."

  8. Good story WWW, I like the picture of stranded people in an old schoolhouse, complete with nasty carrots in the cellar and a bell. I am still thinking, writing and deleting. If this was in my youth, my eraser would be worn down by now.

  9. Hooray for a happy ending! At least, it looks like it's going to be a happy ending, with a grand adventure story to tell the children someday.

In my haste this morning i did not notice you had a picture, so i only used the words. My story is over here.
