  3. It's very sobering to discover that 43 other countries have safer banking systems than the UK, that they actually handle money in a much more responsible way. We Brits have all been brainwashed into accepting that the colossal risks our banks were taking were all perfectly routine. That is, until everything imploded and we got a rude awakening.

    I hope it's not too late!
    @Irene:
    glad to see you made the list!
    @Nick:
    yes, one gets a real chill when seeing the list. I don't know where governments get off thinking deregulation is a good thing. As I heard on the radio today most countries put the fox in charge of the hen house when it came to banking.

  5. The banking situation in the UK is unbelievably embarrassing. And I thought we were cleverer than that. There goes our worldwide credibility.

    I think Bankcorp was very clever in convincing the government to de-regulate. The whole financial system is beyond corrupt and the poor will really suffer as a result. No penalties for the rich.

  7. So, unless one lives in one of the Top Ten, perhaps one should invest in a safe. I saw a report on TV news the other day from a US company manufacturing safes, from the small home variety to big ones costing up to $6,000 ( in the past used mainly by jewellers). The proprietor said that their order book has mushroomed recently. Whereas orders could previously be fulfilled within a week, now it's taking over a month - and many orders are for the biggest type of safe - presumably to house gold bars.

    it seems like the old mattress will come into play, too, safer there rather than the US banks.
    It is the worst of times as Dickens had it.

  10. I think there are Canadian Bank branches most everywhere, Laura.
    I know there are in Ireland, for instance, and in the states and in England.
