"All across the Middle East in the streets, people are demanding democracy. It's amazing. The only way in America you get people to get worked up like that is to threaten to give them health care." –Bill Maher
I heard that dinging yesterday. I filled my car with unleaded petrol. 30.38 litres cost me £39.46. £6.58 of that was VAT for the government pocket, yes the VAT rate now sits at 20%.
Bill Maher sums up the situation perfectly. But Americans believe they have democracy already - that is, the right to run their own lives in their own way. They fail to realise just how dependent their lives are on other people's cooperation.
