RIP

And I suppose he will, RIP that is, once they pry the rifle from his cold, dead hands.

Sorry to offend anyone, but the death of this mediocre actor, anti-abortion, anti-affirmative action, pro Dubya, NRA president - this abomination of a man who was insensitive enough to held a pro-gun rally after the massacre at Columbine gets nary a whit of regret from me.

  1. The level of enthusiasm for gun ownership in the US has always astounded me. Charlton Heston was just a particularly gung-ho example. The latest plan by our PM Gordon Brown is for military drills and weapons training in schools. Excuse me - weapons training? In a country where gun crime is steadily increasing??

  2. And it is all based on fear, Nick. the big, bad bogeyman.
I feel if anyone should be armed it should be the working women trying to make their way home from late evening shifts in low paying jobs without harrassment.
Gordon Brown seems to me to be emulating a lot of what is militarism in the US. Catch 'em young and train 'em as cannon fodder.

  3. I cannot admire Charlton Heston for what he sttod for in real life, WWW, but I shall always remember his performance in "Ben Hur". I'm in no way religious, but "Ben Hur" was, from the first time I saw it in the early 60s, and is still, my favourite movie of all time. Judah Ben Hur as played by CH, a favourite character.
    RIP.

  4. i agree with all you say, WWW. but i still cannot forgive michael moore for the end of "bowling for columbine"--heston was so clearly confused with alzheimer's, it felt like nothing but a cheap shot at a sick man, and it ruined what had been an exremely powerful and important film.

  5. I have no regrets about this man's death whatsoever and I am a Dutch woman speaking! His reputation preceded him around the world and I think he stank as Moses. Good riddance, is all I can say, for his bigoted ideas.

I really liked the book, it was banned in Ireland so we passed around pages of it to each other, did not like CH in the film tho did like Boyd.

Call me an awful old cynic, but I never did buy CH's Alzheimer's. The timing was weird and we can't forget he was a paid schill for the NRA at the time - surely they would have detected it?

    I agree.
I found him an extraordinarily stiff actor and very unemotional.

  8. I've made my opinion of this man well known over the years, on my blog. Suffice to say, he was in favor of gun control, and held relatively liberal views until he became rich and famous. Then, he changed sides totally.

  9. I'd say hefty payments from the NRA might have helped. Moses with a gun.
