The Inner Girl Comes out to Play

Well, I decided I needed a massive makeover.

I got a little tired of the chignon on the back of the head look, the wise aging crone thing was becoming rather tiresome to me.

Inside lurked this young girl, shame no one could see her but me.

I looked at the physical assets I still had:

Thick hair, though greying, not a bad thing I should add, but boring, oh so boring.

Laughing blue eyes.

Breasts. I’m serious. Many of my friends have had life saving surgeries on theirs. Some have had double mastectomies.

OK, I sez to self. What have you always wanted and never had?

Red hair, I responded, an outrageous never existed in nature red, kinda spikey but not that awful shaved look some older women get, moussed messy but with a bit of a hang to it.

Ah g’wan, go for it, sez I to I.

So I did.

Cut it all off, sez I to the delighted shearstress. And dye it the brightest red in the books.

That got everyone’s attention in the salon. They all gathered around me.

Two hours later and we all admire me in the many mirrors about. No mistaking this red. Fire engines would be jealous. I toss my head experimentally. Gawd, but it’s been ages since I tossed my head.

Next on the agenda:
Where the grandgirl buys her clothes. I know they have purple trousers because she bought a pair there. Thank Maude she doesn’t read this blog.

The purple pants are just bloody awesome, I can’t believe what they do for me with the red hair. And I find a purple top with lace, tight, that frames the décolleté. How many years since I had décolleté I ask myself? And what a gorgeous word that is. I must use it again.

Then a long black cardigan to give a tiny nod to the granny status. It looks thoroughly amazing with all the purple and the red. I can swoop about in that, opened like a cape of course, you wouldn’t want to miss the décolleté and the funky pockets all over my pants.

Then a new eye shadow that matches my eyes. To girl me up a little more. And why not the sapphire blue mascara. And oh yeah, the red eyebrow thingy to match my new hair. And some spectacular lipstick.

I haven’t felt this well put together in bloody years.

I just might go back for the orange pants.

  1. Definitely go back for the orange pants. Wait! Did you really do this? It's not April fool's day in Canada or something, is it? If you did do it, you're a woman after my own heart and I love you more than my whole grain hot breakfast cereal (and I love that a lot!).

  6. Ha, someone's been reading Jenny Joseph! Sounds great to me, why not dress as exuberantly as you want? Why slide into the dowdy, bland invisibility that people seem to expect from oldies? So where are the pictures?

  7. I'm thrilled to pieces that you are now a modern rock woman like I am. I find this very daring of you, but somehow I also know you have the guts to pull it off. I would love to see a picture of you, but that would force you out of your anonymity, so I will just let your description do the work. Wowsers!

  12. fantastic, you are the embodiment of me and my mates favourite "old age" poem -The Jenny Joseph one. I have always had a penchant for the colouful and i refuse to dim down too much as i get older, although i have always sworn off the violet or pink rinse that my grandmother and her friends sported. It must be that time of the year though as i've been getting the " must do something different with the hair" vibe. Those of us who don't do beige - unite!!

I will, I'm so glad you followed suit, we need more colour not less in our lives and it is interesting to me which of my friends are adverse to change, it's like they sink into the wallpaper. Whereas one I so admire at nearly 90 strides out on to the world stage in great swoops of scarlet.

Nothing wrong with violet hair either, co-ordinated with emerald green pockety-pants of course and maybe a spangled decollete electric blue top to set everything off nicely.

Our biggest fear is oursselves, afraid to breach what's 'expected' of us. I lived like that for too long in my growing up years.

    Time to live! I say.

  22. Yikes!!!! Good thing you're a Leo WWW ! You can easily carry off that colorful look with aplomb!
Go for it - and more! I'd love to see a pic!

I'm nowhere near as brave as you.
    If I'm feeling ultra-dramatic I go for all black - that's as far as I dare go ! ;-0

It has to be the Leo, doesn't it. Though I must say I lay down with the chignon for far too long.
I think it was utter boredom more than bravery tho, that plus not really giving a flying f*** what others think anymore.

    Bea Arthur Dead at 86

Bea would be proud, and I'm just tickled pink - or, um, red - or even purple. GOOD FOR YOU!!

Yes to the photo. Can I come there to shop for clothes?

  27. Gee Verna,
I never did see that connection between the Bea death and my revitalization. Very good observation, I'd say there's a strong connection in my thinking. I so adored the woman, she reminded me of my adored ex-mother-in-law, fearless and witty and bloody loud.

  31. Welcome to the Peacock Club. At least that's what my so called mates call me. A 6' redhead who loves purple, cerise pink (go try it) and turquoise. Not necessarily together, though come to think of it.....lol!

Growing up with red hair I was always told I could only wear blue, green or brown. What the heck...in my twenties I went to the extreme wearing every colour I could. I remember wearing one yellow outfit with yellow shoes and yellow costume jewellery....hahaha!! About 6'3" in those heels, you need shades to see me coming. I'm crying with laughter just thinking about it. Got called the walking, talking canary....oooooh where's the tissues.

Rock on lady you do your thing.

    ReplyDelete
  32. PS As a finishing touch you could always try those coloured contact lenses if they still do them. I always fancied green or violet eyes but couldn't wear the lenses.

Even tried on some wigs one day cos always fancied being a blonde....brunette suited me better but my Mum spoiled it by saying I looked like Una Stubbs....you remember her in Til Death do us Part with Warren Mitchell?...now I'm showing my age....lol
