British Ingenuity at its Finest

Nothing stops these people from the small village of Westbury-sub-Mendip in Somerset in the U.K. from having their very own library!

Yes, it's in an old phone booth. Who'd have thunk it!

I absolutely adore it!

  1. Somerset is a county. The village is Westbury-sub-Mendip (what a splendidly strange English name!). I was wondering how something so small could possibly be a library and the answer is it's actually a sort of swap-shop. People deposit a book they've already read and take one they haven't read. Very ingenious.

  2. Now would I not wish to miss one single book in my shelves, but this is just lovely an idea.
I'd not even mind to be the librarian.

More amazing I find to see so many people queuing. Never mind, though, if the photo has been staged or not.

  3. Love those old telephone boxes - they bring on a bout of nostalgia! Liofe before the infernal cellphone. Super idea the villagers had!

  4. Thanks Nick:
Correction made, I've been to Somerset but missed this little village obviously. I would love to incorporate such an idea locally here....

Yes, the crowd does look a little Stepford Wife-ish alright, but it sure doesn't detract from the idea. Can I be your library assistant?

I even thought if one could get a disused phonebox what other great ideas would be possible?

  6. I have seen these old phone boxes on sale over the years, It is good to this one being put to good use. Alas here, the books would not last a day never mind a week without being taken or vandalised.

I'd love one of these boxes to lend out my books to my small village. It's the big centres, unfortunately, where the few can spoil it for so many.

  9. looking at the length of the queue those folks deserve a larger library.

  10. We don't have phone booths anymore due to vandalism. I love this idea, though. It would only work in a small village in England.

Yes, there is something totally British about this!

Ah but you're forgetting the social aspect of the whole thing - new book clubs being formed, babysitting bartering, etc.!

I know, when will we be without our postboxes too?
