On My Knees

I call it The Cathedral. On the day my house was offered for sale, the neighbouring landowner put up this eyesore, it is much higher than it looks as it is taller than my two storey house. There are no zoning bylaws in this town, no town plan (though I did put up a fight for one). So if you buy land in my town, you can literally throw any structure your heart desires on it. This is what happened next door to me. Vlad bought up the two parcels of forested land, left them fallow for years and then stripped them and built one enormous warehouse, and now encored with this monstrosity. It overshadows my house and all seven acres of my land offer a view.

On the second day of my house listing, the day it was publicized, there was tremendous interest in my house, agents and their clients drove out of town to inspect, clients eager to make an offer. But as soon as The Cathedral hove into view they quickly changed their minds as it is smack dab up against the right side of my property, blocking the beautiful light from the west.

I was devastated. This is not the first time Vlad the Destroyer has done this. When I went away for a week last year this greeted me on my return:

I sat in my driveway and cried, there were about 500 trees torn down and clear cut to leave these wounds on the land.

But, he is perfectly within his rights to do it as there are no zoning regulations and this is not the first time Vlad has torn down old heritage homes to replace them with monstrous and ugly warehouses dug into the once fertile and forested land in residential areas.

The Vlad plan is to then buy up the adjacent properties of the disgruntled and dismayed and devastated owners at a bargain basement price.

Vlad and his cathedrals to wanton ugliness. This is what happens with no town regulations. Barbarians climb the gates and plunder and pillage and destroy.

I'm on my knees.

  1. Many of us experience something similar here in farming country, with farmers knocking down trees on their land. It breaks your heart. There oughtta be a law against property owners doing whatever they want on their land. The law -- and we ourselves -- should consider ourselves temporary stewards, and the longterm best interests of the land and those who also have a right to it (plants, animals, birds, neighbours, people who will come after us) should have a legal stake. There should be limits to how many trees a landowner can remove. I hope one day lawmakers will make this a reality. -Kate

    1. Well said Kate. I am horrified that so little of any regulations exist in this province. Recently some of the oldest houses in St. John's were mowed down. There is very little value placed on history and I am going to explore why that is.

  2. Sweet jesus. What is that? A warehouse or a workshop of some kind? Everyone complains about regulations, etc., but this is exactly the kind of thing they prevent. I remember reading your post when he tore down all those trees....how sad. Do you think he will offer to buy your property?

    1. It's hard to tell what it's going to be used for as he has a difficult relationship with the truth. And truly, we are not entitled to know with no regulations but as a neighbour, based on the rules of common courtesy you'd think I would be informed. But no. This is all a shock to me, the destruction, the proximity and now a direct effect on my future wellbeing. He will probably want my house at a fire sale price.

  4. That's a bit of an eyesore (to put it mildly). I take it he has never been Mr Geniality where you are concerned.
Like Elle I remember the tree episode and wondering why someone would do that and how on earth in this day and age they could get away with it. But then - some do.
Just curious to know what sort of business ventures he's involved in?

  5. Of course there should be zoning laws that forbid such monstrosities. It's extraordinary that there aren't any. And I was going to ask, why a warehouse? But you answer that in your penultimate paragraph. There is no end to man's wickedness (and it's usually men) But how heartbreaking when you were used to such wonderful views.

  6. I say start a skunk farm on that end of your property...you won't have to endure the smell as you will be gone but might give you a right big bargaining chip down the line...LOL Nothing worse then a really bad smell and you are free to do as you please too right? ;)

  7. Why do so many business people seem to think anything they do is acceptable because it's just business -- their means to an end, however unsavory? They seem to totally lack ethical considerations. Wish you weren't having to experience this.

    1. Thank you Joared. Rampant capitalism and sneering disregard for us peasants. I doubt he even gives me a thought. It has soured all the good I've experienced here.

  8. Oh god... I have no words for this misery. Only love and a wish for you to be done with this. We had some miserable dealings this year and like you decided not to fight it knowing that justice does not always work in favour of the just. Sometimes it isn't just being too tired to fight but too jaded with the system to bother.

  9. Oh no. You had a wretched year also? So very sorry Jan.
Two families in this place and vote against anything that benefits the peasants. Self interest run amok. Or just the same as Big Politics only more evident and in your face.

There was no way of fighting this even if I did have the energy of the health.

  12. Well, harrummff, maybe I won't curse the zoning laws anymore. What an awful thing to have to deal with. Nothing can be done about the trees of course. That was just a massacre, plain and simple. Several years back I spent months in a depression after a neighbour had a huge and *magnificent* maple tree in his back garden cut, and I'd never suffered a day's depression in my life before. I mourned that beautiful old tree as if it were a beloved friend. I feel so badly for you.

But you do have a thriving little B & B going, and there are many semi-retired and young retired folks who are looking for small businesses they can run from home. Your realtor needs to not be defeatist and point out to potential buyers that construction doesn't go on forever, and that the 'warehouse' won't look so bad once it's got a roof, siding, windows, and doors installed and a bit of grass about. There are many houses of this design in rural BC. People like to park their trucks, snowmobiles, quad bikes, motorcycles, and other "toys" inside, on the first floor, hence the two big doors, and they live upstairs. Certainly doesn't appeal to me, but there is *no* accounting for taste.

As we used to say in the dim and distant past when we were young'uns. "Keep the faith Sister!" I think that meant just try to keep from going bonkers over something that's out of your control. <3
