This is a photo taken by Ray Mackey of the city of St. John's, Newfoundland, at night.
This is the city during the day.
The harbour is spectacular and we have ships coming in from all over the world.
Nestled in the city itself is an active fishing village called Quidi Vidi which is beside where I live.
A photo, courtesy of Gerry Boland of Cabot Tower, which I can see from my window. This is the site of the first transatlantic radio transmission in North America by Mr. Marconi. The dog in the picture is Chief, a fixture on Signal Hill for many years, a gorgeous friendly Newfoundland purebred who sadly died a month or so ago from cancer. He and his owner will be missed by everyone.
You live in a very beautiful place. Which is a help and a comfort.
ReplyDeleteIt truly is EC. I love this place. My chosen home.

Fantastic photos of a very beautiful city. A blog mate has been travelling in your province and nearby and has shown some wonderful architecture of so many well maintained homes and buildings, I would guess a challenge with your harsher winters.
ReplyDeleteMy blogmate too Andrew. I hope to see her in St. John's when she finally lands here. I have been to all the places she's posting about!

So beautiful! You are very lucky and thanks for sharing. I would love to travel there. This will go on my list.
ReplyDeleteI do hope you make it some day CSL - it's a remarkable place and the musical "Come from Away" only showed a small part of it.

Wow! Show-stopping. Beautiful. Is it a coincidence that so many windows are framed in white and building colors used are consistent or are there rules about all that? Thanks for sharing. Kim in PA
ReplyDeleteThe houses were originally painted to show the different colours for the sailors (and fishers) coming home along with visitors told to find "the red house, the yellow house," etc. When I moved here first to an outlying village there were no numbers on the houses (now they do). the name for the house I bought was the name of the original builder from 100 years before. I loved the history of all the houses kept alive by these names.

DeleteBeautiful city! I love the colorful buildings and the fact that it's right on the water.....
ReplyDeleteIt reminds me a lot of Kinsale Molly, and some of the villages in West Cork with all the colours.

St John's looks very pretty with all the coloured houses.
ReplyDeleteA few years ago we went to the Marconi sites on Cape Breton Island. We just watched Griff Rhys Jones' programme on Labrador and Newfoundland. Most interesting.
I think you would love it here Nick. It speaks to the heart and so much to learn about the Vikings, etc. Oldest city in North America.

It really does look like a very interesting city filled with character and charm. One cannot say that about a whole lot of North American cities.

Lovely city -- can see why you love it so. Do hope you and your city have weathered Fiona as some of the reports I've read say the storm has been fierce there.
ReplyDeleteIt avoided us on the east side, Joared only the West. I say only as they have been absolutely devastated with one woman in her basement (73YO) retrieving something precious and ocean burst through and swept her out to sea. Her body was recovered. Incredibly sad.
