Arrogance & Extinction

How arrogant of us to think we can live forever, albeit in a more flimsy format. A forever V2.0. Which adds another level of arrogance to the whole scene.

At the accelerated rate of the plundering and subsequent exhausted demise of this planet, some other, more superior being is going to want us to rape and pillage theirs?

See what I mean about arrogant?

Even if possible, who, outside of this tiny earthly realm in their right mind would welcome us?

Wasn't it Stephen Hawking who said we should lie low, we shouldn't be searching for other planets, other beings, for if they find us they will annihilate us as the pestilential plague that we are.

We come up with the means to control our breeding but do we use it? No. We continue to overwhelm this tiny place with a population that is, in most cases, poverty-stricken and starving. We can't even perform the simple task of feeding and housing what we create.

And can we get along with each other? Take a good look around. Animals, birds and fish get along better than us, sharing resources. That is, when we don't exterminate them like we do each other.

We allow paedophiles and misogynists to dictate the terms of our one and only earthly life with the instructions to breed till we drop and exhibit hatred towards others who do not share these 'values'.

We allow rampant corporatocracy to pollute our brains, our land, our woods, our very water and who then proceed to sell the remnants back to us at inflated prices.

I am reminded of all of this as I watch, with horror, the whole deadly plume of crude overwhelming the Gulf of Mexico and wending its way up the Eastern seaboard and maybe right up to Newfoundland.

And what do the supposedly best brains on the planet do? Leave the foxes of BP in charge of the Atlantic hen-house. The foxes who failed every single competency test in the drilling and management of oil-wells.

We are an appalling species. We are not entitled to be in this life. Not to mention any 'next'.

I predict we will be totally extinct within 100 years, maybe less.

  2. Sometimes, Nora, I feel my head exploding and I just can't take it anymore so I vent. Like today!!!
Back to fluffy sometime soon, but I can't promise, we're in such serious shite.

  3. Even bacteria know enough to ease up on the oul' procreation when resources are low and conditions are unfavourable. We behave as we do because we severed our deep connection to the world around us. Homo 'sapiens' my eye...

  4. There is no explaining humans but you've done an admirable job summing them up. I've long held that our species is inherently selfish and frightening in its ill-intent. It is the few who rise above themselves who produce beauty but you say it all much better than I. (Sometimes ranting is good for the soul.)

I watch an eagle soaring overhead as I type, an awesome sight. Freer than me and you. He's made some arrangement with the gulls for the leftover crabs.
I'm finding the beauty here today more poignant, knowing that it can vanish with the possibility of an even deeper well foobar that is being drilled offshore from here about 200 miles.
We are beyond stupid and willful.

Thanks for the kind words, yes we do need to vent it all and take some hope from Nature Conservancy and the Council for Canadians who inspire even a wee bit....

  7. As you said before, maybe one day the planet will just get sick of all these pesky fleas and shake them all off, like a dog shaking off water. Except that then all the decently behaving wildlife will get shaken off as well.

  8. I never did science in school, but surely if the oil 'HOLE' is plugged, it will be the equivalent of sticking a finger in a fast running water tap and the flow will force its way out of the pipe/ground/whatever, some place else.

Only last night I went to bed thinking: With the state of the world, I don't want to live another ten years never mind twenty or thirty!

  9. We (the species) have developed in the way our "chemical" makeup has directed. We came from the bits and pieces expelled by the Big Bang and carry within us all the fury and violence involved. We'll go back one day, maybe soon, to that vast chemical mess from whence we came. We tried, but we were just not made with the right mixture, I guess.

    Good rant!

I think Gaia is getting ready, she's blowing her top in Iceland and her bottom in the Gulf. Both ends so to speak!

Oh I do like your theory! If we are an experiment we are one bollox of a FAIL.
I was just reading about police Sound Cannons to deafen, permanently, the protestors at the G20 Summit in Toronto.
    Democracy in Canada. Deaf.
    I give up.

  13. I am also appalled by the BP accident.
I also think we should "lie low" and not try to contact out in space beings (if there are such things) because, like you said, we might end up as very inferior beings compared to them. We don't know very much about social interaction. Better to concentrate on *here*.

BTW..... I love your knitting! Maggie.

  14. Hi Maggie:
Yes, we should keep perfectly still and concentrate on cleaning up this massive mess we've made in our own sandbox....
    Thanks for the kind words!
