Da Big One

This is the immediate forecast:

For Thursday night there's an additional 35 to 40cm of snow. Friday has another 20cm and this is all followed on the weekend by a dumping of rain. Winds are supposed to hit 100km/hour which will make it a first class STORM alright.

Right now it is -8c which is very chilly for here. It makes for a star struck night though. Every single star keeps the darkness of the sky awash in white. It is spectacular.

The dog barks outside. I can't see at what, but the bay bounces her voice back at her. There is an overstuffed cat who is patrolling the road out front lately. White with black splotches. You can tell by the strut that (s)he owns the place. It could be the cat out on night patrol putting the fear of gawd into the canines. I had a cat like that once. Owned the entire city block. Would walk with our dogs, head high. Other dogs would whine and run from him.

Grocery stores were so busy today with the impending storm coming. I am well stocked. Power outages are the biggest fear. I am grateful I have the wood stove which does just about everything except wash the dishes.

Hunker is the word I'm using. Lots of books, candles and even an oil lamp and Daughter has fortuitously stored a propane ring in my garage.

What could possibly go wrong?

I'll let you know.

And a picture of flower gifts from the weekend (as a scent-filled reminder of "can Spring be far behind?"):

  1. Wow, and here I've been griping about our cold rainy weather - with temps in the 50's!

I hope you get no power outages, but I'm glad ot hear you're prepared. Hang in there!

  3. We usually get the tail end of your east coast bad weather. The weathermen are shouting. I have a camping gas stove & kettle dusted off, candles and fuel for the fire all at the ready.

More important I have snow trax for my fur lined boots and my walk in bed (as seen in my avatar), a winter coat with down & feather filling has me snug as a bug in a rug. My main problem is the metal in my hip feels like I have one leg in the freezer. :( I discovered that reusable gel hand-warmers in my trouser pockets do the trick for a couple of hours.

Keep the cell phone well charged.

Stay warm (miss my wood stove in years past).
    Love the flowers.

  6. I hope the storm turns out less severe than expected, WWW. Forecasters sometimes err on the side of hyperbole so's they can't be blamed afterwards, though these days with all the technology available they do seem to get it right more times than they get it wrong - around here anyway.

Stay well, safe and warm WWW.

I even have the quilts and blankies out to wrap the chest freezer in (food will be fine if freezer is wrapped for 48 hours).

yes I have the grips for the boots also and warm clothing.

I sing the praises of my wood stove all the time.

You stay safe too if it strays your way.

I rely on the weather network, it seems to get it far more correct than CBC and from what I hear of teevee forecasts. You're right about the hyperbole, it creates anxiety and pushes products off the shelves.
Thanks for the good wishes, sky is now leaden and heavy and the temperature has gone up 5 degrees, a seriously bad sign.

Thanks for the good wishes and the recipe. I was thinking of your orange cookies and wondering how a dark chocolate (has to be dark) drizzle on them might enhance?
Thank you so much - will let you know.

  13. Good grief .. and here was I bemoaning the fact that we were promised 4 inches of snow for this weekend. It's extremely unlikely that we will lose ANY services, and it's likely that the snow will be gone again in a few days (if it ever does arrive in the first place).

Thanks for reminding me why I don't live on the Labrador coast! I hope you don't lose power, and that you stay warm!

  14. Hi Jay and welcome to my blog!

This is a rarity here on the part of the Avalon I live on, with the Grand Banks sheltering us so nicely!

The wind is howling as I write and the snow doing what it does best and blizzarding but inside, safe, warm and with POWER!

  15. We've had a mild winter here so far but it is supposed to get a bit colder today, although nothing like the storm that you are in for and I thank the gods for that because I am not that hardy. My ancestors were not pioneers and I do not have that kind of endurement running in my blood.

I hope you will be safe and sound and warm and well fed and well read. I really do hope that your power will not go out. xox

  16. Thanks Irene.
I myself would be a Holiday Inn woman much my as alternative universe would declare me primitive, pioneer and running with the wolves.

  18. I envy you. I would dearly love to hunker down and just laze around, but my karma will not allow me the luxury! Go ahead, make me more jealous.

  19. Best of luck www, hunkering down must be the order of the day. And the next day. And maybe a few more days after that.
It looks like we are finally going to get a bit of winter too. Finally. But, please, no power cuts (outages for you)
