Equal Rights

Of course I'm thrilled that the LGBTs have won in Ireland. Apart from having many gay friends, there are also gay family members. So yes, it's personal.

But like I said to a gay friend in the midst of all the euphoria, when will women be considered equal in Ireland? When will the rosaries stop rattling and Irish women given full bodily autonomy?

Will it happen in my lifetime?

Yeah, big question.

  1. That is hasn't happened yet is a testament to political and moral cowardice. I'm hoping the common sense and decency that contributed to a Yes vote in the marriage referendum will lend momentum to women's rights and reduce the presence and impact of reactionary voices in public debate. But I won't hold my breath.

  2. I think of this often - we seem to be moving ahead on gay rights (and I'm thrilled) but women still aren't allowed to govern their own bodies.

Some of you are having trouble, I've removed captcha and verification so we'll see how that goes. My apologies. Blogger is putting up far too many roadblocks. Thanks for the emails alerting me.
