Sporadia

I look upon this photo with horror. It popped up in one of my feeds the other day.

I drove this sucker every single day for more years than I can count, finally saving enough money to buy a house (on the subway) in the city itself. A friend in LA in the U.S. commented, surely it can't be busier than ours? Googled it and came back at me saying dear gawd Canada wins! Nothing to be proud of, I said. I don't believe I could drive it now having lived on The Edge so long with our always moving four laner.

I was so thrilled to see my birthday (August) gift baby bloom again so soon, such joy and now there are more buds opening up.

I caught this photo out my living room window recently in 'the gloaming" which is a word I never hear any more.

gloaming

noun

gloam·ing ˈglō-miŋ

It was used a lot where I grew up and it happened AFTER twilight. So a different time of day. Dusk would be the synonym alright.

  1. I love that picture, and I'm so glad you don't have to drive in traffic any more. I just drive around our small town, not any farther.

    1. CM I particularly enjoy when the residents out here complain of a one minute jam on our Transcanada Highway. Can't help offering a "Seriously?"

  2. So many people going who knows where all the time. I sat waiting for a bus last week and even in my small town, my road didn't have a single minute without a car on it.
I like the photo through the window.

    1. Thanks River. I wish there was better transit everywhere. Free. Like health care. What a difference it would make!

    1. When you're trying to earn a living no choice, you take the positions where you can, two kids, single mum. So very glad life took me where it did in the end :D

  4. The gloaming is my favorite time of day and you are right. That traffic sucks. How lucky were you to get away! Enjoy your orchid.

    1. I call her Aurora e, reminds me of the incredible Northern Lights. Yes, I was lucky to make my escape. Somethings we feel in our very hearts and follow the call. I did.

  5. You need to get out a bit more to here to see the gloamin'. That is do some roamin'. I saw a photo yesterday from your neck of the country of a barn with a huge amount of snow and or ice on top, with a deep channel dug beside the barn wall. I'll have to look up this notorious highway in ON.

    1. I thought that highway might engage your interest Andrew. Yes, my friends in Cape Breton island ( about 100k from our island) got a hell of storm. One of my friends posted this channel of a pathway to her front door and the snow drifts were over her head.

  6. I am astounded. Never would I have equated any part of Canada with such traffic. I think you certainly made a wise decision to move where mass transit was available.

    1. GS, Newfoundland is wonderful, my spirit belongs here. I know on this 401, right? 1/2 million people on it every.single.day. Worst in the world. Imagine all the gas exhaust in the environment.

  7. Luckily I've never been caught in such a massive traffic jam. Having to travel such a crowded road every workday would have driven me bonkers.
Gloaming reminds me of the old song Roamin' in the Gloamin' by Harry Lauder.

  8. Wow, I'd have never guessed that such roads exist. Makes me so, so happy for my small village road wher only once in a while a car comes from both directions at once.
Gloaming is a new word to me, but the equivalent Danish one is also an endangered word. I love that time of day - but not that it comes as early as it does in my winter.

    1. I agree on the earliness, far too early but the longer summer days make up for living in the northern hemisphere. I am so happy to have left that noisy, polluted life behind Charlotte. Here we have the freshest air in Canada blowing in off the ocean.

  9. So funny: my kids and I were talking about our "favorite" words the other day (don't ask why). And mine is, and always be I think, gloaming.

  10. Traffic like that is just depressing and Sydney experiences gridlock on a similar scale every day. It's depressing.
The orchid is beautiful and it will last quite a while, which is a bonus.
I remember singing a song which talked about the gloaming but I will guarantee my kids have never heard the word
