Letting Go

Glorious sun in the clouds this past Sunday.

If there's one thing I've learned in this long eventful life, it's that it's fine to say one has let go of hurts or slights or losses, it's another for them to be permanently banished. Right?

I suppose the pain gets a little easier but never quite vanishes.

There are loved ones I think of every day. Even though to all intents and purposes they do not appear to love me. My thoughts are not obsessive, don't get me wrong. Not at all. But kind thoughts go out, love is sent and light is imagined surrounding them.

I have this little thing I do. Daily, I'm out on the shore with the dog (and oh yeah, today was her first 2013 paddle in the ocean, spring HAS to be here now!) And I pick up stones from the beach for these loved ones. And I name them. There were a few today. The number varies as relationships wax and wane and evolve. And the odd time I pick up a stone for my mother, or my granny, seeking the wisdom of the ages. And then I whisper a name into each stone and toss them one by one into the water. Sending love. Kind thoughts. Healing. Joy. Contentment.

And I go on my way.

At peace with the world.

  1. You are lucky you live by the ocean to be able to do that. I would toss a rock and break someone's window and have bad luck and the insurance company on my back. Some of these houses have very large picture windows. Our environment determines so many of our actions. But as they say, "We have to row with the oars that we've got."

  2. I've seen dishes of pebbles in people's homes, Irene. You could take them out and then toss them back in :)

If you were so inclined, that is.

    Or needed to.

  3. It just may be possible that I am not as generous as you and don't have such loving thoughts about other people, past or present. If I do, I keep them tightly locked up inside myself. Neither is there wrath in me or a need to forgive or be forgiven.

  4. Generosity is in the eye of the beholder.

Yeah, I try to keep loving thoughts about all who cross my path, but then I am a very social animal and interact a lot with people, both professionally and socially.

But I miss the beloveds who are no longer in my life.

  5. I am not near the shore to cast the stones into the deep, so my way is to light a candle and cup it in my hands for a few moments thinking about the person or persons on my mind at that time. I then leave it to flicker as I go about my work and as I pass I remember the person again and again for the day.

  7. I light candles too, GM, usually for those who have died during the year. Just to remember.

Candles are great for meditation too.

  10. That's a touching little ritual with the pebbles. A lovely way of remembering people and sending them your affection.

It took me a long time to realize that just because dear ones don't love me doesn't stop me from me loving them!!

  13. what a loving thought and deed you do. love is a strange and weird emotion, feeling or whatever it is.

    "So is it real
    Or just a sweet interpretation
    Of the mind.
Capture the moment for not very long
    It will be gone."

is from a poem I wrote long ago.
