Visionary

There’s a clarity to the air here this morning that's like Vick’s Vapo Rub. I took a series of pics outside in my PJs from my deck. It’s not like it’s cold, it’s above zero after all. It's more like you want to drink the air in so deep and so long so that it could fix whatever ails you.

With me, it’s an annoying left eye problem where sometimes my vision goes so blurry as to render me almost blind in that eye. Now I know why others don’t report such things. Dreaded fear of the all important driver’s licence being yanked.

I do have an appointment with an eye surgeon on Monday, referred to him by my eye doctor as he said my eyes needed a specialist's evaluation.

However, I will probably join the ranks of the secretive and not mention the episodic blindness and let him do the analysis based on examination only.

  3. Good luck for the appointment - I hope that it is nothing serious :-(

  4. Yes I hope it's nothing serious or at least nothing that can't be cured.

I have a blind friend who managed to keep it a secret way too long. She couldn't cross the street without someone to guide her, but she still had her driver's licence! All to keep the needed job sorting mail at the post office, and yes, they couldn't tell she was blind either!

[now ya know what happened to yer mail]

  5. Quite right! If he's a specialist he should be able to ascertain the problem without help. My left eye recently began developing light flashes, followed by an enormous black floater that looked to me, and behaved, like a half-dead spider drowning in my eyeball. According to the eye quack it was all perfectly normal and part of the natural aging process (which was fine for him to say, he still looked wet behind the ears). Thankfully, five weeks on it has almost cleared up. The flashes are only occasional, and the dead spider has rotted away to a mere, occasionally irritating, shadow that flits across my vision.
I do hope your problem is equally temporary.

I needed a laugh. Once I read your email I said to the dog:
How 'bout some driving lessons, bud?
At least I don't have the PO to worry about!

Yes, I'm getting the flashes and then a frightening dimness. I used to get 'silent migraines' which were a different kind of flashing, more expanding and expanding and then gone.
Did you find out anymore info about yours? Is it some kind of debris?
Glad to hear you're doing well again!

  9. Oh, w-cubed, I hope all is well. Best of luck, and keep us informed, even if you don't tell the doctor.
    Those pictures are great.

  10. Ooer, that sounds a bit worrying. I hope the specialist finds there's nothing serious going on. Especially when we're all so dependent on the car these days and would find it hard to do without.

  13. I'm the very worst person to be telling soeone to "come clean" with their doc. - but really in the long run you only cheat yourself of early assistance if you don't tell him everything.

    Lecture over!

I hope all is easily treatable.
Perhaps it's an early cataract in an awkward place? Those are very treatable, and I understand they come to us all eventually.

  15. Are you sure you're not accidentally getting the vapor rub in your eye? You should see if it happens on especially clear and beautiful, bright mornings that look like Vick's.

  18. What is it with left eyes? That's where my problems have been too. My sister lost the sight in one eye through MS but did not have to give up her license. Eyes are sort of like kidneys. As long as you have one that works... Good luck with the specialist. Tell him you have to read 50 books a year and he'd better fix you up!

  19. Right missus, I might be late arriving here, but you will listen to my lecture! (hopes she sounds like a school ma'am.)

Tell the full story and let that guy help you. Early detection of eye problems are really important. One of my younger brothers tried the Macho route and denied everything. He now has sight in only one eye.

You want your eyes... to see, to drive AND to read!

  20. To answer your question: the quack told me the eyeball is filled with gel when we are young, but it breaks down and becomes more fluid as we age. Apparently, my problem was caused by some of the gel breaking away from the retina, and putting strain on it - hence the 'flashes'. The lump of gel then floats around the fluid in the eyeball and we 'see' the shadow of it as a floater. Sometimes, the action of the gel breaking away can cause the retina to tear, or in some cases to become detached completely. Tears are easily repaired with laser treatment, but detachment is most serious, of course, and requires complex eye surgery. Thankfully, I suffered neither, though he did warn me that I was likely to experience a similar problem with the right eye, as this aging process tends to occur in both. If it did, I was to consult him again post-haste.
I note from your latest post you have new spectacles. Did these result from your visit to the eye specialist?

Yes, ma'am. Though interestingly enough, I haven't had an episode in 2 days. I don't think it has anything to do with the new specs.
That is awful about your bro...

Oh thank heaven it was nothing too serious for you! I will keep all you said in mind, it may be fairly trivial for me too in the overall aging body scheme of things.
No the glasses were prescribed by my eye doc who referred me to the specialist.
I'm an awful wuss. In case you haven't guessed already. ;^)

They take some getting used to, these glasses, but light as a feather and just about invisible on my face.
I don't think the glasses are connected to my periodic left eye episodes.
