Small is beautiful

Sometimes I tend to overlook the small stuff. But today, on my daily constitutional I brought the camera along. I love walking by the shore in the evenings, watching the light play on the water, the crows who line the shore learning new tricks (picking up the leftover crabs from the seagulls and dropping them from a great height to crack the shells), an errant seal bobbing up and down in play, rabbits, shrews, and flowers. Oh, the flowers that dance up when the sun has been kind. Like today.

The wild roses (dog roses my Granny called them) were brought over from Ireland back in the day and they proliferate everywhere here. I make rosehip jam from them in the fall - a jam I introduced to here.

Then these little purple flowers emerge:

The irises and lupines are on their way.

The outburst of green has been sudden here. Overnight we go from maybe-winter to full-fledged spring. Summer comes in July. And I hear the whales are in.

I must track them down. Tomorrow.

  1. I wish I lived a little closer to the shore for daily walks. The immediate area around me is a little disappointing... maybe it is because I am looking at it too long.

  2. I feel very fortunate that I live right by the sea, GM, it is constantly changing. Though in Toronto I had some gorgeous walking trails right by my house which hosted foxes and rabbits. I also love looking at gardens, other people's imaginations is sometimes wondrous.

  3. I live by the water, too, though the atmosphere is quite different from where you are. We don't have any walking beaches here, so I take full advantage of beach expeditions whenever I'm in the Northwest.

  4. Whales. That's so amazing to me. Living by any body of water is good though - I'm a believer that it is healing to walk by the water, be it ocean, river or lake.

  5. Years since I had rosehip jam but I have some rose hip syrup which I must find a use for.

  6. When it happens it happens overnight. Here too. From cold and mean and miserly to abundance and lushness. And slightly tepid.

I feel very blessed I can plow along the shore though lately I am taking to the roads as I am training and need mileage, timing established. But the sea is right beside me as I do this, though down below the cliffs.

Me too, I believe so strongly in the power of water as we all spring from it and on a cellular level we know this..

  10. Amazing, Friko, I am in awe of the overnights here. Trees suddenly blossom. And the birds come in from everywhere knowing so much more than we do!!
