Cherish

I haul that word out now and again. A perfect descriptor of moments, of little memories, of slivers of gratitude. A word used a lot in the Ireland I grew up in.

to loveprotect, and care for someone or something that is important to you: Although I cherish my children, I do allow them their independenceHer most cherished possession is a 1926 letter from F. Scott Fitzgerald. Freedom of speech is a cherished (= carefully protected) right in this country.to keep hopesmemories, or ideas in your mind because they are important to you and bring you pleasureI cherish the memories of the time we spent together.

I had what I call a "shyte day" yesterday. I cancelled a physical therapy session as the chair yoga I had been doing caught up with me and I literally had pain from top to toe. Add this to the ongoing back misery and I was unfit for just about everything. But so grateful I had purchased a huge quantity of prepared salads a few days ago as I was way beyond cooking anything. Sobeys do the most amazing salads and include protein of all kinds, chicken, fish, hardboiled eggs and a huge quantity of various vegetables. A good ol' Canadian chain. Founded when God was an altar boy. An elder's gift for prepped meals.

But today is a cherish the moments kind of day. Pain has taken a mini-vacation and as much as I despise the unpredictability of each day from a mobility perspective, I grab the ones which don't get in the way of any kind of enjoyment.

I actually have a "visitor" coming today. A friend I haven't seen in a while. I avoid such encounters when I am in the misery of pain and discomfort. Who wants to listen and observe others struggling?

I'm listening to some lovely music (music of my life) which has carried me through challenges and grief and all the ills us humans suffer.

And the moments we cherish and can relive at the touch of a button. I hope you enjoy this duet from The Pearl Fishers.

  1. So beautiful, thank you. It's a dreary day here today, cloudy and cold, so this is a true gift from you. I hope you are doing well today--as with me it's a day at a time hoping for the best.

    1. Yes, there's a gift in that pain in that we appreciate when we get some relief and pack some cherished moments in. Here we have a snow storm but the plows and blowers are out piling it up in those pristine piles of white. The wind is blowing it off the trees, Quite lovely really.

  2. I am so sorry you had that kind of day. I think most of us can commiserate. The salads sound wonderful, just the thing for such days.

    1. Reasonably health Sue and just a lick and spit to stick to all together. I have tried those frozen meals and find them without flavour or drowning in salt.

  3. Sorry about all the pain you are suffering. You must find it quite depressing at times, but it is nice to know you can still find pleasure in things.

    1. Understood, Hels. I was a vegetarian for many, many years but O positive blood type. I was convinced to go back to at least fish. I do eat a lot of fish. And out here is a paradise for fish.

  5. I've had a few shyte days myself, but without the pain part. Your salad looks fabulous, though I am unable to easily chew raw veggies like carrots until I get a lower denture and even then I prefer my carrots cooked. Hope things swing upward for you soon.

    The salad looks delicious.
I'll have to listen to the music when I wont be annoying anyone but I agree that music can be a huge help in getting through a day

    1. I invested in a pair of decent headphones a while back for when visitors are staying and they are worth the really cheap price. they are tiny and also have a mike for Zoom meetings which I sometimes have to have private. Quality is amazing.

  9. Cherish is a word that describes many experiences in life. Perhaps we need to cherish more. I just returned from a brief vacation in The Bahamas where we were three generations together. Now that’s something to cherish!
