Thoughts on Reality

Conversations on the weekend circled around the inevitability of our extinction. As we have passed the point of no return in our extinction plan.

The latest UN report confirms this.

"Earth’s climate system is changing across the entire planet and human activities are worsening its effects which are “widespread, rapid and intensifying”, according to the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report.

"The report by leading climate scientists published on Monday provides evidence that “unless there are immediate, rapid and large-scale reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, limiting warming to close to 1.5 degrees or even 2 degrees will be beyond reach”.

"Such as a scenario will come with inevitable catastrophic impacts over coming decades for human populations, especially in the form of extreme weather events and rising sea levels, the report’s authors have warned."

I'm not in fear of all of this and I don't share the opinions of many, e.g.

(1) There's an afterlife and God/Goddess etc. will save us all.

(2) It's another exaggeration to curb our Free-Dumbs.

(3) Science will save us.

(4)Glass domes over cities with AC will ease the worst of it. (I'd like to see that!)

And on.

No one thinks of the climate refugees escaping from waterless environments and the devastating effects of forest fires. California has never experienced anything like them, along with BC here. And massive food shortages.

I spent time in a roasting hot Labrador this summer - no one had ever experienced that kind of heat up there.

And the humidity and heat on the island of Newfoundland this summer is extreme and unique. And grain is being grown for the first time. And our iceberg season was pitiful.

The flooding is alarming everywhere.

We've all been warned, of course, of this end of days, but nothing of any major reversal has been done to halt the rapid progress of warming oceans.

Capitalism roars on. Gas is supreme still. The plundering of the Amazon (the lungs of the earth) continues

I compare our slumber to the Three Wise Monkeys of old.

Not that us individuals can do anything at all. But I do wonder who else is giving any thoughts to what is going to happen and if you are, like me, resigned to the inevitable and hoping that whatever cataclysmic event wipes our little section of the planet into extinction, it doesn't hurt too much. But then I'm old and may pass before everything gets worse.

Or maybe, just maybe, the new virus variants will take us all out first.

Another excellent read from Science Daily.

  1. Sigh.
And our politicians continue to ignore it - and approve the obscenities of fracking and more coal mining. I despair.

  2. Me too, though oddly not despairing at the inevitable. We here in Newfoundland are still mining the oceans for ever more oil. It's like we're all asleep with no one taking the helm of the ship. I'm supposing there will be riots at some point but too late....

  5. What I have found very interesting, here in Australia at least is that while governments bang on about the need for new coal and gas fired power stations capitalism is not having a bar of them and won't invest in them. Instead capital is going in to renewable energy and battery storage as is the money consumers are putting out for solar panels and batteries. There is hope and while science won't solve anything, following the science will help. I very much doubt the chickens will come home to roost in our lifetime, but the next generation or two is going to suffer. Nice work by you.

    1. We're not moving fast enough Andrew. I had a completely off the grid cabin for many years, hoping others would follow, but no, we're too addicted to on-demand everything.

I worry about my kids and grandkids though. I'm hoping they will change things.

  6. I'm more or less resigned, while trying to do my bit to not pollute too much, but I still hope those with the money and power to do so will see the light and build the necessary infrastructure (dams and piplines etc) to provide water and the ability to grow food to the starving nations.

    1. Dear Mary, that would put the entertainment industry (with their non-stop fornication agenda) out of business - about half the babies born, are born out of wedlock.

    2. Mary, the problem is the poverty and lack of birth control and keeping women uneducated. Educating women is the beginning of their empowerment.

  10. I am not resigned to the worst case scenario. I can't tell you how we will avoid what seems inevitable but I choose to believe we must continue doing whatever we each may do to preserve this planet. I have confidence scientists are at work seeking more ways to address some of these issues. I think more people are waking up to reality and maybe more positive actions will be taken. The combination of all this may in fact put us on a road to eventually successfully correcting this situation. I likely will not live to see the outcome but will continue striving as best I can, in my own little way as I believe more will do, too, in the challenge to save our planet.

    1. I hope you are right Joared but I fail to see how rampant capitalism with its agenda of plundering continually this finite planet can be halted in our lifetime. I remember what Michael Moore said one time, something like: What does it take to stop this incessant greed? "Does the sun have to come up at midnight to get our attention?"

I find the wealthier people I know do not care a fig for climate change and put it down to scaremongering.

  12. Like Joared I am not resigned to the worst case scenario. Our progeny and descendants will definitely live in a very different world but not necessarily a better world. Our education as a species has been accelerated, whether we pass or fail remains to be seen. Final exams not yet written, humanity must step up its game in the last hours.

    1. P.S. - After reading your post I read ranprieur.com’s post for August 9, very a propos! Ran suggests we are at the confluence of 3 major threats, only one of which is climate change. What a thriller!

  14. Hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil indeed. Still far too many politicians and organisations pretending everything's just fine, a few tweaks here and there will get us back on the right road. Like you, Jenny and I are assuming the inevitable - humanity will be wiped out through continuing political inertia.

I am seeing evidence all around me of making this a political game when we have the capacity of halting this lemming-like plunge over climate cliffs.

  19. Yes, I think of all that is happening to our good earth. We've really fouled it up. I don't expect to live long enough to experience the worst of it, but I am concerned about my children and grandchildren. I do believe there is much we can still do and definitely should. I don't know how successful we'll be in preserving our planet but we need to make the effort despite all the "flat-earther types", some of whose actions, or inactions, seem to be trying to making the coming of the end of the world a self-fulfilling prophecy.
