An interesting few days.
I was saddened to read of an internet friend whose husband is now in hospital awaiting placement in a memory care facitility. She was taken to hospital herself last week and is now debating MAID* as her liver has gone into failure. What moved me greatly was a picture her daughter posted of her hospital room. Her husband was moved into her room. I thought this was so compassionate. And all for $0 as it's in Canada.
I have mixed feelings on MAID. A good friend just underwent it a month ago. Many ill women in poverty and without family have opted for it. Some choosing in advance (long before any terminal illness) with their doctors co-signing. Poverty would have a major influence, adequate or familial care or concern not available. I'm a firm believer in addressing root problems first. The financial inequality for women in their elder years. But that is a longer article. I'd like readers' thoughts on this. Feel free.
Meanwhile, I advocated for assistance for seniors with mobility issues in our Health Science Centre. Through many barriers, I remained calm and reasonable. Some hospitals have porters but not ours here in St. John's, and new hospitals (like the aforementioned) have incredibly long corridors to navigate, along with poor signage and no website maps to show the clinics in the hinterland of their vast tracts. I have an infusion coming up next week so that fired me up. Daughter has taken far too much time off work as it is, carting me hither and yon plus expenses associated with this. I desperately sought some alternative. And reader, I am the first test case on Tuesday next. Someone will be waiting to take me around and bring me back. Long overdue for many like me. Another lesson in it being worthwhile to fight for rights for the disabled.
