One of the best places on earth.
ReplyDeleteIn 1987, we stayed in a very similar house high up in the hills above Bantry Bay, looking south. My daughter was 4 years old then and she still talks about the summer in the white house with the frilly curtains.

Its 1968 and we're conducting a sit-in at The National College of Art in Dublin. We're campaigning for an independent governing body for the college, because while it remains part of the civil service female lecturers cannot marry AND keep their jobs ! One night during those five weeks of being vilified by the press for our bad behaviour Paddy Maloney of The Chieftans wanders in, sits down with a huge grin and gives us all a wonderful evening of music magic. I've never forgotten it.

Oh Enna, what a lovely memory! And how extraordinary to get male support in a time when there was very little in Ireland.
ReplyDeleteI, too, lost my job (with CIE) when I married but was offered it back on a contract basis for 1/2 the wages and no benefits or pension.
