Yes, I'm up at the Tigeen where the writing flows non-stop in waves of literate and compelling paragraphs.
NOT!
See above.
See below.
Handcream I need handcream, I have to go back down to the house.
Those early notes I made in that notebook need to be up here, I have to go back down to the house again.
Chilly – a bit? - I need to light a fire.
Oh, not enough wood.
Oh, not enough kindling.
I need to go down to the barn and bring some up.
Where's the dog?
I should bring up her dog dish and fill it.
Did I bring up enough food for lunch?
Coffee. Not enough coffee.
Oh, let me write a few notes for the blog.
I think I should test-drive the loft bed, just for a few minutes.
You have things well in hand, there's always tomorrow, at least until there isn't. Then, who cares?
ReplyDeleteCheers,
Mike
Very well in hand, would you like to take my writing course?
ReplyDeleteYear 3 is a good one.

It's amazing how many distractions pop up as soon as you're trying to write something. And they all seem overwhelmingly urgent and in need of immediate attention. Like that embarrassing pile of dirty dishes that just has to be dealt with NOW. It's astonishing that any book ever gets completed.
ReplyDeleteGood luck :)
ReplyDeleteNick:
ReplyDeleteI'd call it edgy, like everything has to be perfect, pencils aligned, papers in order, files at the fingertips.
I'm only this kind of OCD when writing.

It always makes me feel better to know other people do this too.. So, thank you :)
ReplyDeleteI often ponder how people do actually write entire books. Amazing.
Hi Heather:
ReplyDeleteAh, another well organized writer with everything finally at hand. Now what?

Okay, enough of this banter with those of us who read and comment. Get to writing.
ReplyDeleteOops, I think I may be part of the problem:)
Procrastination is the universal bane of writers. I have first-hand knowledge. I'm halfway through the first draft of a second novel. I haven't looked at it in nearly a year. My excuse? Right now,I'd rather write poetry. I'll get back to the novel;someday...
ReplyDeleteEver since I came across the term "displacement activity" when I was a student, I can giggle at myself when I have a burning desire to scrub out the toilet, clean the cooker. I realise then I'm putting off something I don't want to do.
ReplyDeleteIt's mind boggling how many hitherto undesirable tasks suddenly become imperative.
Nowt so queer as folk.
...and cleaning the TV remote very carefully with a handkerchief wrapped round a toothpick...
ReplyDeleteSharon:
ReplyDeleteI did some "studying" on techniques for powerful openings, is that enough?

ReplyDeleteI've never lugged wood up to the Tigeen in my life. Until it comes time to writing.
"Displacement activity", wonderful, I must look for some toilets and get out an old toothbrush :)

Don't laugh, but I do occasionally take out an old toothbrush to clean the loo. I focus down until everything else disappears - a bit like a meditation.
ReplyDeleteI have a memoir in very rough form just waiting for me to revise and type it out.
ReplyDeleteBut I have had to do a lot of cleaning around here.
It seems that it's writing I assign myself as a task that I don't get around to. Blogging? No problem! That's playtime for me!
Writers make world-class procrastinators. And thanks for the Tom Gauld cartoon: I love his work but hadn't seen that one.
ReplyDeleteI roared laughing! I'm the same way. You'd think we'd cut out the shite and just write!
ReplyDeleteAnd I want a tigeen of my own, please.
Just read some more of these comments. Who's Enna? I already love her!
ReplyDeleteIf I were to occupy your tigeen, I would be on permanent procrastination. It looks so peaceful that I will simply go into trances there.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful place to write--or not. I decided that every moment is my moment to do with as I please. It's a great way to take the pressure off. And how IS that loft bed?
