Flotsam and Jetsam
I don't know about you, but I find that the creative energy can be sucked right out of you when life goes sideways. Like there's only room in the head for some flotsam and jetsam - no choice, take it or leave it - and it pushes everything else right out the ear. So you're left with maybe a book that you can climb into or various games of solitaire, the kind that you can get over involved with. I imagine if I had a teevee that I would be glued to it, anything to completely numb out and NOT THINK. Noise, distraction, meaningless repetitiveness.
The bench you see above is at Daughter's Place. I designed and knitted the cover for it back in August as the existing cover that was on it (a marvellous flea market find) was falling apart. The colours match her living room furniture.
I stayed with Daughter over the weekend and I kept staring at it. And then I took a picture of it. And then I thought: I have that old bench in my house, cover falling apart too. Maybe? And I took designing pen to paper and now I've started on another cover and the flotsam and jetsam can hardly breathe, I do believe they're choking.

I love it and makes me envious that I cannot do this kind of work.
ReplyDeleteNow I can design, plan, work in garden and home - but no handwork
After divorce I did crochet 16 afgans (spelled wrong :)
Now I want to do again with wonderful colors and patters
and try and try and cannot seem to do it ")
Your bench with special cover
will be beautiful :)
You can do so very much Ernestine. I love your gardens and your cooking and your overall creativity. We all have our own unique gifts. It's quite wonderful we're not all the same in our talents :)

You've given me something to think about in regard to the reason people sometimes seem to be addicted to television or other mindless "entertainments" ... .
ReplyDeleteIt's a numbing out. I knew if I had one here II'd be suckling the screen off it. Anything to stop the noise inside. The big BUT is of course is that the noise waits and waits until the volume is dealt with.

From one old crock to another:I am beginning to think that maybe not just ageing but life itself is not for sissies.
ReplyDeleteMind and body have a lot to say to each other and if the mind carries a permanent disability (i.e. a sadness) around with it how’s a body supposed to cope?
Coming out here to blogland helps in a way, we can say things to each other which we probably wouldn’t say quite as clearly to anyone in the family. During my recent bout of misery I have taken to reading books I would normally be ashamed of, stuff so light weight it’s embarrassing - not yet reduced to chick lit or women’s fiction though - thrillers and fantasy and such. (I loved the Elegance of the Hedgehog which I read before my brain turned to mush)
Writing has taken a back seat. I feel quite desperate at times.
Creating beautiful pieces like this seat cover makes up for a lot of misery, at least you have something good to look at, something you can be proud of.
Let’s drink to a better future. Cheers! I wish I had half your drive.
Gawd Friko Thanks but I feel my drive done up and left me high and dry. I rolled 3 movies n by myself tonight. Not bilge but still. I sit there and do nothing else. And I've seen the movies before lol.

That's a nice colorful, upbeat cover. Certainly a better use of your time than watching TV. Thing is, it's not to hard to find another good book; but it's almost impossible to find decent TV program.
ReplyDeleteUnless a repeat of those excellent series of the past.
DeleteBooks are my saviors Tom I feel I can crawl in and stay for a while in a good book.

What a lovely cover. And you're right, a serious project like that sends all the flotsam and jetsam packing.
ReplyDeleteThanks Nick - I'm still rolling with it.

Isn't it wonderful what action can do for us? A project to work on, an activity to participate in, something to challenge our creative sense? A new and creative focus will often drive out the demons. And in the end, we have something to be pleased with. Well done :)
ReplyDeleteAmazing alright Pauline and it doesn't readily come to mind when the F&J take over the brain.

Are you watching yourself too closely? Is it possible to step aside and treat yourself as you would treat someone else! With a little more kindness and a little less judgement - nothing wrong with flaking out now and then is there? We are retired aren't we? Music, music, music - its fucking wonderful! Give yourself a whole bunch of stars for listening to music for a couple of hours! Daily?
ReplyDeleteI practice following my own advice!

I do so wish Betty that emotions and feeling were a voice we make. How simple and predictable life would be, yeah? Music can help alter the mood from bad to worse and vice versa. Unpredictable too. Unfortunately. As a wise one said to me one time we can never walk around the feelings we have to walk through them.
