Words for Wednesday

River is hosting December's Words for Wednesday. Please visit her blog to see what others have done with the words.

This week's words are:

1. controlled*
2. strolled*
3. belongings*
4. shook*
5. leather*
6. reminded*

and/or:

1. pedal*
2. black*
3. digs*
4. sheepdog*
5. sample*
6. routine*

She had to mentally pedal back and control the rage that shook her suddenly. She reminded him that Alfie, her Irish wolfhound, had strolled in with her when she originally signed the lease for the digs a month ago. Pets allowed. He hadn’t mentioned Alfie not being allowed.

Now she was here, all her belongings out in the street with the mover, Alfie panting beside her after the two flights of stairs.

Buzz, the landlord, stood there in the hallway in his black leather jacket, booted legs spread, arms folded, forehead furrowed.

Pets mean cats, small dogs, fish, birds, not these huge aggressive noisy beasts, he said scathingly.

I can give you a sample of how good Alfie is, she pleaded, look! And she went through all 50 of her routine commands which Alfie instantly obeyed.

You had me on the bark and quiet orders, said Buzz, visibly softening, arms unfolding, now let me give you a hand with your stuff.

If you are so inclined, have a bash at this yourselves, it's a lot of fun!

  1. Hooray for Buzz being reasonable. So many people who are afraid of big dogs cannot see past their fear. I grew up with German Shepherds (learnt to walk pulling myself up on the dog's tail and teethed on his ears) and have a huge weakness for big dogs.
Loved your take on the prompt.

    1. Having companioned many dogs myself, I know it's all in the training. Some people don't train their dogs so they have no sense of boundaries or obedience and are unpredictable. I don't trust them and people shouldn't. There is a joy in training animals as they love the sense of safety and security it gives them - and everyone else.

  3. Great story. I did not even notice the words as you used them, and a happy ending. What more can you ask for?

  5. You had me at the photograph, WWW! Irish Wolfhounds are my favourite breed, though owning one has to be a fantasy for me. Nice wee story and what a good name for its star turn - "Alfie" :)

    1. Mine too T tho never had one of my own. My second choice was the border collie tho I've had 2 Lhasa apsos. But all these breeds are so intelligent. And easy to train because of it.

I miss all the dogs in my life. It was lovely to create Alfie.

  7. That is one big dog. But Buzz should have known that the size of a dog bears no relation to whether it's well-behaved or not. Tiny dogs can be a bloody nuisance if they so choose.

    1. I had an absolutely vicious Lhasa Apso Nick, she would attack giants of dogs. One German Shepherd put her in her place one day by picking her up by the scruff of the neck and depositing her on my lawn.

I've never known a feistier and funnier dog (she'd slide down the slides in the children's playground just for the hell of it, lol.)

  8. I controlled my laughter as the young lad shook his leather satchel spreading his belongings in a controlled avalanche of parcels. Reminding me of Santa on the hearth.
