Music and Memories

Funny how a playlist can pierce my heart. A theme pops up in a mix and it grabs me by the throat. As it did just the other day.

I remember playing this as I left a beautiful beach with Ansa, my beloved rescue dog-companion. We had been playing ball and chasing some shore birds. And the glory of a sunset was just beginning.

And this piece of music popped up in my Ipod in the car afterwards.

The movie theme from "On Golden Pond". Henry Fonda's last film for you movie buffs. Henry and Katharine Hepburn, his co-star, both one Oscars for their roles.

It had been a couple of years since I moved to Newfoundland.

And there was a rush of feelings, an ecstasy if you will, as I realized this was one of the happiest moments of my life. Being here, in this place, by the ocean, breathing in the glorious sea air with this happy dog. There was no better place but the right here and the right now.

I am so grateful for those musical moments, of which there are many in my life. And I like the forgotten feelings they generate.

And here is the glorious Ansa 1999-2016.

Did you have any such moments? I'm not talking weddings or child births or meeting your one true love. But where you're all by yourself and just feeling the glory and wonder of this universe?

  1. Nah, I'm a miserable old git. I suppose I can be quite happy gazing out a train window at whatever view is passing, be it suburban or countryside.

    1. I hear you Andrew (surprisingly?). When I ride a train in Ireland I feel quite overwhelmed with the beauty of the countryside and the beautiful towns.

  2. I do have such moments, usually when I am out walking in nature and there is no one else around, places where I can't even hear traffic, such as the clifftop boardwalk at Marino, south of where I live, the tree covered hills of Stirling, to the east, if I walk far enough away from the township.

    1. I think these moments catch us by surprise, River. We can't plan them.

  3. Music isn't big in my life, but I do have those moments. Usually moments in nature. Scent and/or light will bring them flooding back to me.

  4. Those moments, yes I've had them too, I think they are what Anne of Green Gables call "the Glint" a feeling as if the veil covering the world is about to be drawn and betray its deepest secrets. These moments get fewer as we (I) grow older, but they are still there, and looking at a pond with duck weed, or whatever caused the magic moment in the first place, can give almost the same feeling again.

  5. I keep having them all the time. Either while listening to my FM radio in the mornings or through messages received in my WhatsApp or facebook from friends or family members. I wrote a blog post just yesterday about one such flashback.

  6. I have quite a few of these moments. Not with music (though one of my favourite playlists moves me to dance and sing all the time, and clutch at my heart), but out walking on our road. -Kate

  7. I get that way every time I sit in my chair in the carport, gazing at my garden, the sky, the birds, the feral cats, and the people walking by. It is wonderful.

    1. It can get quite emotional Nick. I had a few long moments like that on our recent trip to Labrador.

    1. I miss her like mad, Linda. She was an out of control rescue when she first found me. Tied up and fed bread as a constant diet. It took her 2 years for me to train her and she was the best of all my dogs. Sensed my mood, guarded me, and had a grin the size of a football. A joyful dog who brought ME endless joy, a real companion. I miss her every day.

  11. Thank you for this ... yes, I've had moments such as you describe although cannot remember specific ones. But it takes one out of oneself and is unmistakable for what it is. Thank you too for the picture of your beautiful Ansa, I always admired her and would have liked to have had one of her siblings if possible. Take good care of yourself.

  12. Yes, I have had moments as you describe though not in recent years. Mine often occurred when I was alone in some natural nature environment. Certain music can recreate some similar feelings.
