She's wearin' right thin.

Somewhere along the way, winter, most often embraced, the odd time humorously tolerated, sometimes escaped from, became an abscess on the arse this year.

Normally, the photo above, taken yesterday, would enchant me.

But the grey blurry line beyond the trees? Yeah, that's the snow/ice covered bay. Seriously.

If things would stay that way, like the photo? Well, yeah, it would be lovely, like.

But they don't. And there's the rub.

It all melts into a puddle within a day or two. The puddle ices up. Then yer freezing rain falls on top of that.

And then the snow piles on again.

And then 100k/hour gale force winds howl around tearing the snow and running it into six foot drifts. And the temperature drops to minus double digit Celsius.

And these endless cycles repeated ad nauseum from November on through to now.

Every journey planned has to be plotted out carefully in conjunction with forecasts. One could get dangerously trapped in a blizzard/sleet/wind storm. Or worse yet, black ice.

Worst. Winter. Ever.

/whingey whiny rant.

  1. Different conditions, same result. Snow, ice, snow, melt, sleet, freezing rain, snow, repeat. And tonight? Lightning! and rain. So I'm with you. Worst. Winter. Ever.

  2. Brrrr....the thought of all that conjures up the need of a warm bed - electric blanket - piles of books and stay there all winter.

I don't think I could adjust to those wintry conditions you experience. I visited UK last January and thought I would die. It's 9C this morning, lovely sunshine, and it feels cold to me.

Go well when you have to go out.

  3. We had a taste of that at the end of 2010, when there was snow and ice continuously for around 6 weeks. As you say, it's pretty for a day or two and then it rapidly becomes a pain in the backside.

All of us experiencing this are getting quite depressed.

    Oh stop it already :)

We're all mentally affected by this. Even the most cheerful!

I think back in the day we were hibernators. We should head that way again :)

I have a good weather predictor on the web, really, really accurate down to the hour. A necessity!

  7. Apt description of this winter, for sure!! Here in the winter we plan trips around the weather, too, and in summer we plan trips around the tourists. Just the way it is, but this winter really has been challenging in many ways, much more snow, ice and deep cold. Yesterday we were in near zero visibility fog and then had a massive thunderstorm that lasted an hour and a half!! I am not complaining, though, as I know NF weather is way more severe than Cape cod.....

  10. Our friend Anita (who lives in BC's Okanagan) is married to a Newfie and waxes rhapsodical about it.

"The weather is never bad in Newfoundland," she says, with a perfectly straight face.

Well, I was born in the morning but not *this* morning, so I take *that* with a handful of road salt. We watch the CBC describe 100 kph winds and howling blizzards, look at each other and say, "Anita said the weather is always good in Newfoundland!"

But it's much the same out here in the foothills of the Rockies, so we're all in the same pickle mix.

  11. Yep ,its getting to be a bit of a drag.

My dear old Grand pappy use to say that in Canada we get two months of poor sledging.

Now where did I put my golf clubs?

  13. Sounds terrible. We have been getting more tourists than usual here in Hawaii. Must be the godawful weather in so many places.
