Sunday Smatterings

Thank you France!

It was a shock finding this package of Brioches Au Lait. Actually baked in France. Probably shipped (literally) to our island frozen and then tossed on the bakery shelf. Delicious. I make cheese and tomato rolls with them. I remember trying this particular delicacy on the Channels Islands way back in the mist of time when "Hey Mister Tambourine Man" was a big hit and what happened in Jersey stayed in Jersey.

Web hunting looking for an attractive device to hold my hair (none found anywhere here) I found this. Made in France yet again. And in true La Belle France elegance it came in its own organza bag with a wee satin ribbon. And my dears everyone likes it on my head with my hair piled happily beneath it. I look organized and librarian like. My look. Deceptive.

I've had two excellent days in a row. Where walking has been less painful and I got all my mountain of laundry done. That sense of overwhelm was absent. I treasure these days more than I can say.

In the "what we don't know about people" department.
Grace's son, all 70 years of him, supervised his "muscles" (his word) - his two grandsons - today as they removed the big furniture from her apartment. A huge amount of it. Eight bookcases. Full of classics and great women writers like Margaret Atwood. This made me sad. If only I had known I would have enjoyed a cuppa with her and a good discussion on our reading habits. She was never one for newsbagging (marvellous Newfoundland word) around the halls. Like myself.

And how has your week been?

  1. I don't know if our brioche has milk or not. Be careful. Some people have a real thing for the librarian look. It can be sad when you realised you could have connected with someone but never grasped the opportunity.

    1. Yes, so true Andrew. I might watch myself with the fetishy fellahs around the building. LOL. I feel really sad about Grace, I feel we would have had a lot in common with our love of books.

    2. Do you have an area there that is a library in the building or a place for reading material that can be shared. Might be a start on meeting fellow bookworms.
Glad you are feeling on the alive side for now.

    3. Hi Gemma

Yes we have 2 libraries but most readers are solitary like me. And a tentative formation of a building book club went nowhere.
      Which is sad.

  2. I feel you sent some of the pain south this week. On the other hand, it's still Saturday here, and I think I can wake up happier tomorrow.
That is one beautiful hair clip. Holder. Messy bun grabber. Does it fold in a big swirl?

    1. Yes it does Joanne and I am so happy with it. Oh dear on the pain, I strained a muscle yesterday and am being extra cautious with myself today.

  3. Librarians have long been some of my most favourite people. Love that clipp/grabber and am sure you rock the looks. And yes, I am with Andrew in grieving for connections never made.
Hooray for a week without overwhelm and with less pain. Many cheers. Three is totally insufficient for that wonderful state.

  4. Eight big bookcases?? I wish I had space for that many, those apartments must be fairly big? Or did she squeeze herself in and around furniture to move?

    1. Mixed size bookcases and when I was outside her open door from time to time (she would just peer around it) it was jammed with furniture. I imagine her bedroom and living room lined with them. I have 5, 2 tall ones. Yes the apartments are fairly spacious.

  7. I love reading your comments on my Toronto posts and hearing your memories.
Soulpepper Theatre had a production last fall called "Riverboat Coffee House: The Yorkville Scene" that I loved.

  9. I have recently discovered a lovely bakery--The Brioche Lady. She is Vietnamese but lived in France for a long time. She brought her brioche recipe to Fresno along with her surgeon husband and 7 children and has made a new life. Although not a fan of brioche, hers is very good when it's made into French toast!

  10. Viva La France! I am happy for you for the hair clip though I cannot figure out quite how you will use it.

My week started off with a niece visiting me and cheering me up no end and concluded with my visiting the widow of a friend who not only lost her husband recently but also her son to a hit and run incident. She had expressly forbidden me from visiting her earlier but, called me over yesterday but, on seeing me broke down. She explained that this was why she had forbidden me from visiting her. I spend quite some time with her cheering her up to the extent possible.

  11. Glad to hear that you have had two painfree days, it makes such a difference to one’s outlook. And brioche as well, delicious.

It’s sad that we often miss out on potential friendships, simply by not looking for them. Do better in future, won’t you. You can always forget to keep in touch when things don’t work out. I’ve just done that myself, what I thought was a possibility turned out not to be. So I just left it at that.

    1. Yes, always on the lookout as we get older for new friends, it is wonderful when we find them and can relate and kindred spirit each other. But yes, we don't know until we try.

  12. OOh! Love the hair clip thingie, WWW - bet it looks gorgeous! I suspect that you are not a librarian by nature (you'd spend all your time reading those books!) :) I think the librarian look would be a good one though. I wanted to become a librarian after leaving school (once I found that being a reporter for a newspaper was out of the question in our small-ish town). Didn't make it to the library though, because when a vacancy came up I was already ensconced as assistant in the County Archivist's Office - that turned out to be very interesting too.

Glad to read that you've had some good days, health-wise, WWW. I'm trying hard to have one - kicking my own butt and making myself do stuff - doesn't come easy though.

    1. You've had it very rough T and it must be so hard to even have a passable day. Interesting you wanted to be a librarian, I know I'd be useless as the patrons would continue interrupting me with stupid questions, dragging me out of the paradise of mountains of books to read. LOL.

Hang in there and like me, cherish days of less pain, more activity.
