The Irish Loop

We have this marvelous meandering coastal route called the Irish Loop. It's where Irish settlers came and - ahem - settled going back as far as the early 17th century. Little villages and towns scattered along the whole 300 km of it.
Here's a map with the route marked in dark blue. Every turn in the road has a breathtaking view.

I live in St. John's. Daughter lives in St. Vincent's (where the whales roll in by the hundreds every year) so we decided to pick up a Jiggs Dinner in Fermeuse (approximately an equivalent drive for each of us)- all restaurants here are doing a roaring trade in safe takeaway as long as you pre-order and then they tell you what time to pick it up. What a meal this was!

This is what we overlooked as we ate in Port Kirwan:

Then we visited a local wood sculpture, I love his owls (my spirit animal):

Then we realized we had friends in the area so did a safe drop in and had tea and a slice of boiled cake, overlooking this view:

On the way back I stopped at St. John's Harbour to look at the ships that are in (one of my favourite things) but that sky caught my attention again.

What an absolutely splendid day, and yeah the lovely sun, and skyscapes, how magnificent are those?

  1. Pleased to read that you had such a great outing. Although you painted your ISO situation well, I am sure you were getting very itchy feet.

    1. Just to get out in the clean air and spend time with Daughter. Amid the surroundings we both love.

An absolute tonic, as we day back home.

  3. What a lovely day. I've not braved delivery food and the idea of public transport? Nope.

    1. I wouldn't go near public transit E and I have only had grocery and medications delivery left with the building manager who brings everything up (gloved and masked) and then I decontaminate carefully.

Food yesterday was a distant pickup and we had sanitizer with us.

Though only 1 case here in 3 weeks we are all super cautious. Second wave is a reality I believe.

  5. Those views are beautiful, thank you. it's the sort of place I could live in quite happily except for the cold, the snow, the ice and being so far away from my kids. I'd better stay here.

    1. That's a lot of reasons not to live here River. I'm not a sun bunny by any stretch of the imagination so like the colder climes even though I got sun burned and bitten alive yesterday. It is an aloe slathering day for me.

  9. I couldn't find any of the places you mentioned on the map even though I enlarged it. Maybe a different part of the island?

  10. Hi Crris, Fermeuse is there and maybe the smaller places aren't mentioned. We were near Ferryland and Renews.

  11. Hi Chris, Daughter lives near Peter's River, I'm in St. John's, Fermeuse is on the map along with Renews which is just by Port Kirwan, some of the places don't hit the map at all. But that will give you a sense of the length and our meeting point in our cars :)

  12. What a superb day WWW! I so wish I could transport us to live in Newfoundland! The USA, and especially its president, is becoming more dreadful by the hour! I've not been successful at cutting myself off from politics, as you've been - things are just to horrible here to ignore.

Reading about your experiences offer a breath of fresh northern air to me though! Thank you! x

  13. I think when I realized there was nothing I could do to change the mind of a particularly hostile acquaintance on his truculent stance on privilege was my moment. And 45 is an abomination and the mockery of the world.

I have enormous compassion for my USian friends, it has never been so pitiful a country at the moment and IMO needs the constitution revisited and the electoral college abolished. Will it happen? No.

  14. You mention that owls are your spirit animal. I've always wondered about spirit animals, what guides you to know? Is there a process to follow? Having always loved and been interested in animals would like to find out. Thank you, what a comforting thought.
