The Chieftains - The Bells of Dublin

Every Christmas Day, for yonks, I play this album. It's playing now on my old fashioned Ipod hosting 6,000 of my favourite songs and bits and pieces, resisting the urge of all to convert to Spotify. Not yet.

Here's the album in case you'd like to enjoy The Chieftains too. "Rebel Jesus" is one of my favourite tracks. How on earth did the Christian world manage to pervert his message?

We have a lovely day planned with many of my family here to celebrate. With utmost caution as The Plague is manifesting itself here, so much so, that the testing lineups were miles long yesterday, Christmas Eve. Alarming so many thinking they need testing in our quiet backwater on The Edge.

Wherever you are, whatever you're doing: Stay safe and warm in the cooler climes like here, and cool in the hotter climes of this world.

See you at the other side.

  1. Merry merry! Both my sister-in-law and one grandson have tested positive in Ontario. Grandson is doing fine so far, living in the parents basement and communicating with those upstairs by cell. Kids today! Haven’t heard yet from SIL, no news is good news I think.

  2. Testing is the thing to do right now, so kudos to all who are doing it instead of assuming we aren't carrying this damn thing to others.

Best Christmas to you, Maid Mary!

  6. You won't see me lining up for hours in the hot sun to get tested, testing stations here are drive-through, so cars only, so I stay home where I am safe and wear a mask to and from the shop, so I have no need to waste time with testing.
I listened to the first five minutes of the album, I like what I heard and will listen to more another day. Merry Christmas, stay safe, stay well.

  8. I'm just getting back to blogs after auto-immune illnesses decided to assert themselves before my doctor and I could wrestle them back into abeyance. As I age, my strength to do so wanes, but my patience and acceptance and joy in little things grows. I'm happier. I'm in Texas, so I need say nothing more about the state of things regarding Covid. We've got a routine now for family gatherings. They're outside. For today's gathering, the high will be 80 degrees (about 27 Celsius), and we'll be at a daughter's house. The six of us will all test beforehand. I'm immunocompromised, so will sit away from the others, masked when I'm temporarily within six feet of them. However, my granddaughter is deaf and needs to see my lips move to understand me. She has cochlear implants, but still needs those other clues. Fortunately, she's so good at it, that I can sit fairly far away and whisper, and she still figures it out better than if I were closer and had shouted, with mask still on. It's not our treasured big-group gatherings and the food is not our traditional food, and my husband and I were alone yesterday for Christmas and my 72nd birthday, but I'm so grateful that we've figured out a way that we can meet. I hope your gathering brings/brought you much cheer, too.

  9. I was lucky enough to sit in on an impromptu session Paddy Maloney gave when he came into the College of Art to play for us during the 1969 sit-in. I did a quick water colour sketch as he played - I wonder if I still have it? He was a sad loss this year - a gentle man with a huge talent.

  10. I'll never forget a wild night with Chieftains in Dublin years ago. Dancing in a hall somewhere. Maybe 1971. They were wonderful.

  11. I guess the queues for testing were to avoid passing on the virus to their families at Christmas. There was a lot of nervousness about that in the UK. Hopefully 2022 will be a better year and the virus will be less of a threat.

  12. Sorry I am late but, I hope that you had a grand Christmas. Nice music. I am delighted that you still use your Ipod. You have inspired me to try and revive mine.
