Some people should come with a trigger warning. Seriously.
She'd been hired by the HR department to assist me in my increased responsibility due to the expansion of the corporation.
An essential component for the job would be the expectation of expertise in software management and public relations.
She was taller than normal, a whopping six feet, so she towered over me. It is challenging to instruct someone when you are looking up at them all the time. Add to that an unwelcoming demeanour in her slouched shoulders and nail chewing.
When I outlined more of the details of the job demands, she kept moving from foot to foot adding to my annoyance.
"You are familiar with power point and spread sheets?" I finally asked her.
Oh boy, I think she'd bitten off more than she could chew judging by the blank stare I received from above.
"Well, no, um, what are they?" she said, bored, disinterested.
"I think I might have to call HR," I replied, frosty, frustrated. She was a diamond in the rough, for sure, and not one I wished to polish.
"Oh, I wouldn't do that," and she yawned right in my face, "Mom is the vice-president of marketing, Cheryl Manning, recently married to the president?"
Haha. I knew there would be an ironic twist to your story.

Sigh. All too familiar. And I am surprised she was given a job of 'assisting'.

I seldom read the "prompt" posts; my scrambled brain can overload. But remembering the grumpy day you mentioned, I took a look, and what a great find. It sounds so real. I wonder?
ReplyDeleteI'm restored today, thank you Joanne, and thanks for reading the vignette. It happened a few times to me with daddies telling me to find something for son/daughter to do as they were "brilliant". Oh dear. In one case it was a mistress. Oh dear again.

Oh dear, I hope that didn't mean she had to put up with this yawner. I can see no work getting done at all, or certainly none on time.
ReplyDeleteWell it just doubles up the work for one so encroached upon. The other yawns their way around, never finishing anything, using daddy as a crutch.

Hiya - well that was interesting ... the only good thing would be that 'she' won't be around for long - perhaps the teaching could be transferred to a computer specialist in Word and Excel - that'd take her away for a while!! Otherwise one of the triggers will be pulled - cheers Hilary
ReplyDeleteEventually they do fade away when it becomes impossible to deal with them and the disruption even hits the boss's ears but by then a lot of ill will has infected offices.

Oh no. She sure sounds terrible. I have known a few of those dad's kids, but prais God none as bad as her. Wel written, I almost ruined my shoes from curling my toes at her.
