Covid-19

I realize I haven't been active on my blog or on yours for that matter for about a week now. I was busy with the usual, medical stuff and then Covid-19 got my attention as so many here (including those that should know better - government and health care) on this island were being totally cavalier as to the huge tsunami coming our way. Being elderly and vulnerable I thought to form a Facebook group which is now growing exponentially with global and local stats and articles from all over, particularly Italy, which is one of the canaries in the coal mine so to speak. And of course advisories and personal experiences and recommendations.

For now I am self-isolating but have shopped essentials and as I never in my life have been bored, enough knitting and reading and DVDs and streaming services to make it all pleasurable.

We don't have a case here yet but rumours abound from local people who attended a resources conference in Toronto which now has victims. Along with many returning from sunnier climes where pandemic cases exist.

I think we all fell down when Sophie Gregoire, our Prime Minister's (Justin Trudeau) spouse, came down with it.

If you need a link to my FB Covid page, just fire me an email (wisewebwomanatgmaildotcom) and I will send it to you. As this blog is anonymous, for many reasons, I can't link here.

I had a really good day yesterday(my last self-declared free ranging day for a while) and met with some good friends and essential-shopped and exhaustion seemed a huge distance away. I really treasure those special days as they are rare. A day at a time is how I am living now.

How are you all out there in this new land of Covid-19? Any tips or safety measures or changes or are you feeling safe and not vulnerable and confident in your country's management of this enormous threat?

  1. I'm not on Facebook, WWW - and not inclined to join at this late date, but had I been a Facebooker I'd definitely have joined you there.

I've been staying away from people as much as possible since late last year, because even ordinary 'flu could hasten my demise, due to compromised immune system. Due to Covid-19 now we're shutting oursleves in even more stringently, though we don't know of any local Covid cases yet (Tulsa is nearest and it's at least a 4 hour drive from here). It'll reach us eventually.

We've done a light stock-up of essentials and non-perishable foods. Lots of hand-washing after shopping and putting shopping away; also more hand-washing after dealing with the mail - letters and any items bought on line might have come from infected places and it's not known for sure how long virus lives on certain surfaces.

I don't really know how I feel - confused is the best description, I suppose - and hurt when I read of certain individuals writing or saying that it's a welcome cull of the elderly and disabled. Maybe at present the elderly are at the brunt of it, but when it comes around again, as it will, it could be a very different story.

    1. You are living like I am then T. I just posted that Broadview article on the culling of the elderly and the gleeful demise of Boomers. Appalling stuff. Add to that the disenchantment talk of the disabled.

Worrisome times. I'm taking this seriously and it has long been foretold.

We are not as smart as we think we are.

  2. Like Twilight I am not on FB.
We had our first confirmed case on Thursday of last week. Panic buying is rife though. Toilet paper disappeared ten days or more ago. As did hand sanitiser. Rice, flour and a few other staples are been put on restricted purchase.
We simply don't know enough and I am watching and waiting.
One of my least favourite politicians received a positive diagnosis yesterday. The rest of Cabinet sees no reason to test themselves or self isolate.
Stay as well as you can.

    1. You too EC, this TP buying baffles me completely as does the anti-bacterial wipes which have no effect on viruses.
Simply washing hands is good, all the time.

  4. I like your description of free ranging. I am here in California and canceled a lunch set for today at a restaurant that I organized, all of us are over 60. I am staying home since Tuesday, thank goodness for blogs and books and British TV. A friend did come over for tea on Wednesday. Be well.

  5. I live in Eastern WA and things here are nothing like Seattle (altho my next door neighbor's sister was in the nursing home in Kirkland that had many deaths!). But since both my husband and I are in our late 70's, I am worried. And our son in Seattle has type 1 Diabetes which is always a worry. Like you, I have books, movies and lots of knitting to entertain and we take regular walks. Sadly, no trust in our government to do the right thing.

    1. Mary you are not alone in distrust, that is why I decided to take the major step of isolating myself as I have a compromised immune system and am elderly and there will be no assitance (no beds or medical interventions) for us.

  6. So far no diagnosed cases here (NS) although 2 local people (in my town) did attend that conference in TO. Am trying to observe safe hygiene. Have been visiting a friend in hospital and there are signs up everywhere about the virus but I don't see a lot of vigilance there about hand washing etc. Talked to a nurse friend who thinks we are grossly unprepared and the poop will hit the fan very soon.

  9. I feel like I'm holding my breath and waiting it out. We haven't been stocking up on anything as we are already prepared for weeks of seclusion with a full pantry, cupboards and deep freeze, but in town today I noticed there's been a run on asswipe and hand sanitizer. When I told Dad that on the phone tonight, he laughed! surprised I guess that even here people aren't taking any chances.

On Facebook this morning I saw a meme saying that the reason to be afraid of shaking hands is actually the shortage of toilet paper.

    1. This TP obsession is crazy Kate, I mean we can use torn up sheets or water FFS. And diarrhea is not a symptom of Covid. We should bring back bidets even. I think I have about a month's supply in of essentials.

  10. I was feeling relatively safe with my usual handwashing, breathing through a hanky while on public transport routine, but now I'm taking the extra step and wearing cotton, washable gloves while on public transport. I have enough food to last if I should have to stay home, but tomorrow I'm shopping for the 'little' things, cans of tuna and herrings, boxes of tissues and fresh green beans that I can freeze.

  11. Lots of Brits are saying that the government is doing too little too late, and is only now getting round to banning large public events etc. Boris Johnson made a shocking remark about losing lots more elderly loved ones, just one example of his cavalier approach to the virus. As I have no way of knowing who is carrying the virus and who isn't, I'm just keeping my distance from people and taking the attitude, either I catch it or I don't.

Schools, gyms, swimming pools etc have been closed down for a while till the dust settles. My GP has recommended that I stay at home considering my COPD and age and I am quite happy to follow his advise.

  16. Although the school districts all announced their closures on Friday for the next 3-5 weeks, the church's preschool board, on which I sit, said, no, we will remain open for the next week, and meet again to see how things are going. We are going to let it be for the next week.

  18. Because I'm 70 and my medications for an auto-immune illness purposely knock my immune system back, I self-isolated early last week except for necessary doctor's visits. My husband is running essential errands, but we use curbside delivery for groceries, etc. I miss my exercise classes, where I laugh and catch up with friends, but I'm happy at home most of the time. Because this was treated as a political issue and a hoax by our government at first, however, even my two daughters approach this differently. One, the one who has the same auto-immune illness I do, is continuing life pretty much as usual except eschewing the gym to work out at home, and the other is self-isolating herself and her children. People in my deeply red state and town, including most of my relatives and friends from school, treat it as an insult if you wish them well, telling you quickly that this has all been exaggerated.

We’re over on the east coast of Yorkshire at the moment miles from anywhere and plan to stay that way, keeping in daily Whatapp touch with family and friends. xx
