Two Wonderful Things

The 21 days were successful. Now it's up to me to keep on this track of self-care and healthier living.

I'm still having trouble with these new pain meds. They are making me feel worse if anything. Discombobulated. Not myself. And pain, as we know, is like another person in the room, taking up a huge amount of space, greedy, grasping and sneering.

The first wonderful thing was I was asked to write another article for an on line magazine on women and alcoholism which would be a follow up to a previous article I wrote.

The second was CBC called me - that's the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation - to appear on television and speak on radio about food insecurity as it affects seniors so I am working on that at the moment. So many additional issues challenging seniors during Covid. I will provide a link to anyone who wishes when this is up.

This is all as a result of founding the Support our Seniors Group. I've been on the media many times in the past advocating for all the issues facing the elders of our country (particularly woman) living in poverty -  with so many of us surviving way below the poverty level and just plain struggling, taking poorly paid part time work, eating cheap food, unable to afford dental, eye and hearing care (not covered by our universal health care).

I saw this great line from a comedian friend yesterday:

"Hearing the ancestral bark of the Black Dog."

Those of you with depressive episodes will relate. I did.

  3. Huge congratulations are in order. Firstly for your 21 day turn around, and then for both your article and the talk with CBD. All of them are impressive. My mother was an alcoholic and the damage she wreaked on herself and her family still resonates.
I am sorry that the new meds are giving you that space cadet feeling. It is truly foul and I hope it goes away (a long way away) to play with the Black Dog. Soon.

    1. Thanks EC, I am so sorry to hear of your mother and her effects on the family. My extended family is riddled with alcoholism but the good news is that so many of us are in recovery. Oddly enough my dad never drank and my mother just had the odd celebratory glass. It is a dreadful disease and steals everything good.

  6. You're going to be on TV? That should definitely help to get the message across and I hope it brings good results.
Sorry to hear the new medication is causing problems, hope that settles down soon.

  9. Getting back into writing and radio/tv is exactly what will get you out of the mood that you have under the past few weeks. Congratulations and all the best.

    1. Thank you Ramana, going off the meds has helped too, my reaction to them I understated but it was horrible. A kind of unpleasant stoned and impending doom feeling.

  11. I could just repeat what EC said. Gratz and well-wishes from me as well.

  12. The Support the Seniors Group seems to be going from strength to strength. There's certainly a need for strong lobby groups on behalf of those struggling oldies who tend to get forgotten about.

    1. It is desperately needed Nick. And none of the government funded groups are helping apart from lip service. It's disgraceful.

  13. Spent some time catching up.

That's cool about the invitation to talk about food insecurity. It's astounding to me in my own country how many seniors and children don't have access to adequate food. So much for being First World countries.

    1. I was reading about the millions of children also that are going hungry, SAW. Heartbreaking. And homeless too. Many seniors are homeless, fallen through the cracks. Even the ones with a roof finding it difficult to feed themselves properly. Especially women who've earned so little and often just in part time with no pension.

  14. Wow that's great!! Let me know when the CBC thing happens (or will you be posting that link here?). And I would like to read the other thing if you are making that public. We take our health for granted when we are young and strong, then it becomes a delicate balance between diet, meds and how much we can tolerate.

  15. Congratulations on all your successes, including your concerted 21-day efforts. Pain is exactly like another person in the room, talking over others so that you can't even attend to conversations some days. The new article and potential interview must feel a little like rewards, although we know we're not always rewarded for our efforts. We keep them up because it's in our makeup to keep fighting for ourselves and others.
