The Call

I listen for it.

It happens unexpectedly.

Come try me!

The tiny voice, enticing, pulling me towards the source, a source of what? I need to find out.

I ignore the old voices telling me all the downsides clicking like rosary beads, so many beads. Sorrowful mysteries. Click click. Lie down, be quiet. Not for you. Never for you.

I answer with why not, so many times I lose track.

It's the why nots that set me on fire, answering the call willingly when it comes.

Then I say yes, like Molly in Ulysses. Many yeses, cancelling all those nos, all those fears, all those hesitations. Yes, Yes and then Yes some more.

In spite of. Because of. YOLO coming late to me.

They say you're funny and amazing and one of a kind.

And I finally believe them.

  1. Never say never. That's the rule. Always possibly, or maybe, or indeed...YES.

    1. Exactly, the suiting up and showing up philosophy, feeling the fear and doing it anyway.

  2. That's a lovely piece of prose, WWW - poetry, even. I read it as a kind of ode to risk-taking - something that we, persons of a certain age, sometimes find it easier to do. We risk falling flat on our face more easily than we did in our more self-absorbed heyday. We don't care any more. As you wrote, YOLO - so do it while there's still time to enjoy it! :-)

    1. The sadness comes with it arriving too late and there is so much to gobble up. I am becoming far more selective as to how I spend my time and who with. Time to just enjoy and investigate ways of doing so much more, often free of charge :D

    1. And refusing to let the nos yell and scream and stamp their feet, yes?

    2. Most definitely. And not letting them sulk at me either.

    3. I was passing on these nuggets over coffee to a friend today as she was feeling quite cowed and almost apologetic. I must say we both felt quite empowered at the end. She has back issues and of course I've got Da Legs. But there is so much else we can do with our lives. And crush those voices.

Good! Because you are what they say and I'm glad you are finding yourself.

    1. It takes a very long time indeed to release those voices from childhood and even beyond.

I still say no too much and yes too little. But I'm working on it!

    1. YOLO is a good policy Nick, especially as we haven't got that much time left, or energy :)
